In the USA, you can do a deed search at your county courthouse. This is a task usually done by a "title search company". I have had many title searches done over the years and the results are often very interesting. What you will discover is the successive names of the people who have owned the land upon which your house is built.

Finding out who built the house is another matter. Sometimes it is a matter of seeing a spike in the tax valuation indicating that a house has been built on the land. I have found that my local historical society is the best source of information for when an old house was built and who might have built it (or had it built by someone else). Many times they will have historical photo archives from private donors or newspaper archives.

Good luck with your search for information.

If you live in England you can contact the Land Registry 08709 088 063. They might have old records of who lived in your house. If you're a Leaseholder then check the original Lease. It will tell you who the Landlord was at the time it was built if it's a long Lease, that might be a starting point.

If you have a mortgage on the house, look through your deeds. they usually contain previous owners and building permissions etc.
