Why couldn't he run a peaceful insurgency and maybe talked mutants into moving to, say, Oregon in order to have some consolidated political clout?

Magneto and Xavier are very like Malcolm X and Martin Luther. One rallied, while one took violent tactics. It probably related somewhat to where MAgneto came from, a war torn world and german camp. He probably felt that only violent tactics would make the humans realise the message he was sending and he probably felt that being diplomatic was not doing any good.

Magneto survived the Nazi's He knows what it was like to be herded into camps and watch people be put to death. To be told one story, but to live another. He doesn't want to see it happen to mutants, and he will do anything within his power to make sure it doesn't. The humans fear mutants, and what they fear they usually try to destroy. Magneto fears that humans will try to wipe out mutants. However Magneto is also a little psycho as well. He would like nothing better than for Mutants to assume control over the humans. He thinks that humans are inferior to mutants, and that mutants are the next natural evolution of the species, making humans obsolete. Magneto sounds kind of like the Nazi's that he hates so much. If humans were herded into camps, would Magneto care??? I don't think so...

Basically, Magneto has wanted different things at different times in his career. There were times where he tried it Professor X's way, including that small time where he was subbing in for Professor X as head of the X-Men (read the wikipedia article, it's true). There are also times where he puts actions in motion to do more than gain Mutant Liberation, but even strike hard against the humans. Remember, he feels Mutants are superior, as in rightful rulers of the earth. Tough to convince humanity to be ruled without some violence.

Simple. Magneto wanted a world of mutants only since normal people were so weak and pathetic. He would use extreme force to acclomplish this. The X Men were formed to stop him mainly.

Because they kept persecuting him, even when he was peaceful. They burned his house and killed his daughter! That would be enough to drive most men into violent rages.
