I'm not sure if he can handle a meatier role. He is good at the character he plays, but if you pay attention to his movies, they are all the same character in each one. Except Six Degrees of Separation, but you can see him struggling with that role. He was much younger then. So maybe it is time to give him something good. But when you have a sell-able commodity like Will Smith you won't take the chance of ruining that product by making it good, a shame as it is.

Yes, "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" did very well. At the same time, it was not entirely Will Smith's acting who built the show, Carlton, Hillary, Uncle Phil, and Jeffrey all played good roles. While "Fresh Prince" was funny, it was not a good enough portrayal of acting to compare to Denzel or Sidney. The "Cosby Show" was very good, does that mean we should cast Bill Cosby into the next would-be Denzel role?
"I would like to see more AfricanAmerican actors in meatier roles instead of the ..." - African Americans get "meaty" roles in movies. There are plenty of white people who play secondary roles ALL THE TIME. Sometimes aspiring African American actors get secondary roles, and continue to become great actors IF PROFESSIONALS IN THE ACTING COMMUNITY AGREE THAT THEY ARE GOOD ENOUGH. They cannot be expected to please 100% of the fan base 100% of the time. Do you have millions of dollars to invest in a movie idea? Well, if you do, then please feel free to make all the movies you want.
Will Smith has been in I, Robot, Enemy of the State, Men In Black, Hitch, just to name a few. They were good movies, and I enjoyed them. That doesn't mean he's the next Denzel Washington.
Not to be too harsh on you though; I think the acting community does a better job casting roles than I would. I'm just saying that they know what they're doing, for the most part.

Will Smith is an absolutely fantastic actor, and it has been a pleasure watching him mature and achieve more and more over the years. I think he is taking on more "meaty" and serious roles. I know that the plot was slightly comedic, but he did play the lead part in "Independence Day", which is unusual for a young black actor. And "Ali" was a very serious and thought provoking film. I think with a little more age and experience, Will smith will certainly be in the league of the greats.
What I would like to know is where are the young black actresses?

I cannot take will smith seriously. He always has a smart line or funny thing to say and his face is too comical.

not sure he could pull of more in depth roles since he seems so laid back and easy going that i dont think it exists in his person to be anything else but it would be interesting to see him try
