Problem. I have to use an old Toshiba laptop with an early version of XP with service pak 1. When I downloaded and installed service pak 2 it refuses to open windows. To add to my woes, somehow all my restore points are wiped out. I booted in Safe mode but my internection connection wont work. So I manually removed all the secuity updates through control panel. Now I can get windows to run, and connect to the internet.
So you may ask why did I try to update? I have these pop ups that say the are "messenger service" and that I have serious registry errors and that I needed to go to a specic site and download their registry cleaner etc. etc. I realize I have serious security issues if these buggers are popping up and I have a pop up blocker installed. (Google) Unfortunately, I am using AVAST which I just read is the worst antivirus rated by PC Magazinne, HELP

In frustration I tried to reformat using the disc that came with the cumputer and it won't do diddly when I do.

Service pack 2 was delivered in two versions. One was for those who had SP1, and one was for those who had no SP1. It seems that you had got the wrong version of SP2. If possible uninstall SP1 and then install SP2.

When you boot press f8 this will alow you to boot in safe mode with network drivers installed. If the system is that far gone try to get what you can when you are in safe mode. You can use a usb thumb drive.after you get the files you need you can make a boot disk. Once you have the boot disk made copy format.com to it. Then boot from the floppy.. at the a:> prompted you will be able to do this command (note you will lose all data on the drive) format c: /u this will remove everything. you will then have a clean drive and should be able to load the windows cdrom and go from there.

Hope that helps good luck

You have a spyware on your PC that is causing the popup ads. Use another computer to download a copy of both Ad-aware and Skybot Seek&Destroy from download.com (both free). Run them on the computer to clean the spyware. See if it will boot right after that.

If not, you should be able to put in the XP CD and do a system restore once the spyware is cleaned.

OK that's about 10 different issues. Firstly you tried to make a major operating system change on a machine infected with viruses/spyware. For free try removing viruses with AVG. Spyware try Adaware, Spybot and Hijack This. The rest of your problems will likely ease once the machine is clean.

mcafee is an exceedingly annoying application, it demands a lots of area in RAM, and it does administration each and each application in startup, now considering the fact which you have put in that on the tip, the pc will run that application on the tip of startup checklist, and because it is going to bypass and verify another application it is the reason it is slower, i might inspire you to no longer to apply mcafee in case you have the flexibility, pccillin is plenty lighter and quicker, and you would be able to desire to get it for extra low priced.
