Assuming Windows XP...

As you did not tell us a USB what??, I can only give general guidelines.

First, go to the Control Panel, double click on System, the Hardware tab and open the Device manager
Look for any items with a yellow triangle! on front of it, or a red x
Right click and uninstall the device
Some USB devices require that you run a setup CD before you plug the device in - once you have uninstalled, run the CD and then reinsert the device

If it still does not work, go to the USB section of the Device Manager
Right click on and uninstall everything in the USB section (this will clear all the stored settings for USB devices)
Reboot the PC and it should refind the USB port(s)
Then inser the USB device and see if it works

Depending on the device you are plugging into your computer you may need to download the correct driver file.

The driver file is basically the "instruction manual" for the computer so it knows how to use a device that has been plugged into it.

Your usb port is probably not connected to your computer mother board
