it's right next to the oil pan(under the engine). and about the oil, it is a good idea, but remember. you can't mix regular oil with synthetic. i work at a dealer and here we offer both oils.

p.s. with synthetic oil, your oil change is less often.

1-Unless it has been relocated (by means of a mounting block and hoses) it should be on the passenger side of the block.

2-Synthetic oil is great for harsh conditions (LOTS of towing, extreme adverse weather conditions, etc) but I have never ever had an engine problem that was related to oil and filter and I have only used the least expensive oil and filter that money can buy and change it every 3000 to 5000 miles. I'm talking about getting well over 200000 miles from an engine, usually outlasting the vehicle it is in. It is an expensive nonesential. Synthetic tranny oil though may be a different story.

Open the hood, and as you are standing in front of the vehicle, the drivers side is on your right. Stand directly in front of the drivers side headlight, lean forward, and look down. There may be some air intake plumbing and/or a box there for the air filter. If you will look under the air filter box, and back towards the headlight, you will see the filter. If not, look at the back of the engine on the drivers side just in front of the bellhousing. There should be a round thing with two hoses about 3/4" in diameter coming from the engine. If you will follow these hoses, they will lead you right to the filter. One will go to the radiator, while the other goes directly to the oil filter. The reason? It has a remote oil filter due to the lack of room to put it where it should normally be. Synthetic oil is debatable, and always will be because it is lacking in some properties that all oil used to have that used such things as a rust inhibitor added to the oil, and a very highly sought after whale oil additive that is no longer used in the production of any oils. Synthetic oil does not cling to metal parts well, runs off after sitting, and offers no protection on cold starts. The up side of synthetic oil is; it travels throughout the engine easier, causes less heat buildup, and extends the gas mileage of any motor. Conventional oil has been around since the engine came into existense, has an incredible track record, but does require changing more often. If you will look in any factory vehicle owners manual, you will see that synthetic oil is not reccomended during the break in of a new engine. Makes you wonder why, doesn't it? I am a certified master mechanic, and have been in this debate for years with many people as well as other mechanics. Go to any aftermarket cam manufacture such as Crane, or Competion Plus, and read the how to break a new camshaft in, and you may also be shocked to read they do not warrant their engine componets to be broke in using synthetic oil. An engine with a lot of miles on it can come apart, if it has synthetic oil put into it. I'm not a fan, and suggest you read your owners manual, and use the grade of oil the manufacture suggests. I'm not knocking synthetic oil, but I have seen my share of blown engines in my time, and strangely enough many of them switched to synthetic oil not long before the engine let go! All engines have play or slack in the bearings, and oil fills this void, thus the moving parts move on oil rather than metal to metal. Does it make good sense to put a synthetic oil into an engine that has a lot of wear on it? NO! How much mileage on an engine determines the weight of oil one should use. A pretty new engine will work fine on 10w 30w, but if you live in an extreme northern area that see's tempratures below 0 degrees quite often then a ligher oil is reccomended. If one lives in an area such as the deep south a 10w 40w or 10w 50w will be what you need. I'm sure I will get some arugments concerning this issue, but I can only tell my experience with these oils. In a lot of cases synthetic oil will work great up to about 100,000 miles, and past that you are on your own. Some oils are formulated for high mileage engines, and does work very well. Again, check your owners manual for the correct engine oil, and follow their suggestions, because they spend millions on research and development of their porducts, thus arriving at what they conclude to be the best methods for their products use. Have a good one!

Crawl under the truck at the driver's side door and look for the oil pan and transmission between the front wheels, just to the left of the oil pan is the filter. Lefty Loosy, Righty Tighty
Regular oil changes at 3000 with an oil meeting requirements is all that is necessary. Get a 2-stage filter and change it at 3000 miles, also.

you can use a synthetic oil but i prefer a synthetic blend. in My suburban i have 189,800 and i use Castrol syntec blend with a Fram PH5 extended gaurd oil filter but i'am switching to a mobil 1 filter cause with synthetic oil a cheap filter does catch the dirt so i;d get a very good filter and if you use that stuff i'd say you could go at least 6 thousand miles on a change or more good luck!!!
