IN their culture, long necks is considered pretty. The necklace they wear does not lengthen the neck, but deform the collar bone. The appearance is a longer neck because the collar bone is lower. The muscles can not support the neck if the necklace is removed. The neck muscles atrophy. The weight of the necklaces deform the collar bone, and many ailments are caused by a weaken skeletal structure and muscle structure.

Culure and a sign of beauty. There are other cultures outside of Africa that also where rings/necklaces around their neck to elongate. The only danger seemed to be that the women can't go without the necklaces for long -- they usually remove, scrub neck, and put new rings on.

in that specific culture the more rings a woman can wear around her neck the more beautiful they see her. Also i think it has something to do with indicating social status.
The dangers... well the neck stretches and the vertebrae and neck muscles weaken dramatically, if she takes the rings off... her neck will snap from the weight of her head!

It is status and makes them look more appealing and elegant.
The dangers are that they have these rings that support their head and thus they dont rely on their neck muscles. Should these rings be removed they could suffocate if their neck muscles are not strong enough to hold up their head.

In some cultures, long necks would be considered attractive. It could also be perceived as a fertility thing, the longer the neck, the more fertile the woman...

Its a status symbol as much as a mercedes is in the west.If the rings are removed they die as their neck bones cannot support the head. In fact it has been used as a punishment for some major crimes

Most African women don't.
Those same women that do would probably be aghast if they were told that in Europe and North America women starve themselves, sometimes to death, in order to be "beautiful", to mention just one thing.

tradition and beauty purposes i suppose.
and those rings they coil around their neck... the neck doesnt really elongate... it has something to do with the rings pushing their shoulders down and the "neck" is actually the spinal cord..
thats the best i could remember..
