England took over Wales, Scotland and Ireland (the ungrateful irish didn't want to play so we had to give most of it back apart from the northern bit) These places are the Kings land (Kingdom) and we now all happy and contented together so we are a united Kingdom. Although we are still great britain as well

The english tried to conquer Scotland, but couldn't! They kept getting their heads kicked in (literally) so the english begged the Scottish to sign a treaty that would make the two country's as one, The United Kingdom!

Most of the above answers are a load of ****.
England was cobbled together from the Saxon Kingdoms.
Wales was conquered by Edward I.
Ireland was claimed after the death of the last Great King during Tudor times.
Elizabeth I died childless and the Scottish royal family (House of Stewart/Stuart) inherited the lot.

pretty soon after we invaded scotland (see braveheart) and when we moved on the welsh, and then in the 1600's the lords and ladies moved protestants (william and mary and the orangemen) into northern ireland, which until that time was a wholly catholic country.. and thats a war weve been fighting for nigh on 300 years... against the IRA.
its united, because its run from whitehall, and has one sovereign. Queen Elizabeth. (this used to be true for the whole commonwealth)

because there were kings of Scotland etc, but they all got taken over, either by battle or marriage till they were all in one family, then they became the United KingdomS, the last s being lost.

the king of scotland (James VI) inherited the English throne from Elizabeth I. Wales aided Henry VII to claim the English throne and made an alliance with him as long as he gave them a prince who never spoke English - so he gave them his son (Arthur) who was still a baby and hadnt spoken English. No idea about Ireland.
