If this is a serious ?, then I say to make sure the socks are not turned inside out-that way the bottoms get cleaned better. The second thing is to not put any clothes but socks in the washer.

I bet this is a serious Q.
I say tie them all together with a cord, and a weight on the end. Leave the weighted end of the cord outside the washer until all the cycles are finished, then keep that same configuration through the drying process.
Or just put them all in a mesh laundry washing sack, until you are at a point of sorting, counting, pairing them again, and put them away.

I find it easier to wash socks,
if I take them off my feet first.

Washing isn't the problem, it is the monster in the dryer that eats them.

'deathdealer' has a point. 2 socks go in....only 1 comes out.
