A look at the lyrics provides a few clues. As the New York Times notes, many of the words are "fatalistic." Lines like "I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all," "nothing really matters," and "too late, my time has come," imply the song's author and composer, Freddie Mercury, was dealing with inner demons.

Despite the band's strict policy of not revealing the song's meaning, British DJ and entertainer Kenny Everett claimed to have heard an explanation from Mr. Mercury himself. According to this article from Blender Magazine, Everett claims Mercury told him the song's lyrics were just "random, rhyming nonsense."

Seeing as Mr. Mercury passed away in 1991 and the surviving band members aren't talking, it seems we'll never know for sure. If we had to hazard a guess, though, we'd say the song is a type of fantasy written by a complex person and, like the best kinds of art, not intended to make perfect sense.

I have absolutely no idea.... But I'd love to know. I think the band members know but they're keeping it quiet. Freddie Mercury was such a wonderful person. A legend that should never have been taken from us! Bohemian Rhapsody was the biggest selling song of all time and the story will always remain a mystery, but one thing I do know, is that Queen will never be forgotten!Best wishes to you all!

Hmm. I always thought that he was informing his mother that he had just killed someone -- either literally or figuratively -- and that he was running from justice.
Then some figure appears, either demonic or angellic, and tries to take him to justice.
At the end, he gives up the struggle, because "nothing really matters".

Perhaps he meant that he was struggling with impulses to kill himself, and the demonic character is his suicidal impulse.

Anyway, here are some hints to help you figure it out, from http://www.queenwords.com/lyrics/songs/sng11_01.shtml :
"Bismillah" is the opening word in the Qu'ran (Koran) and literally means "In the name of Allah."
"Scaramouch" according to the dictionary means "a stock character who appears as a boastful coward."
"Beelzebub" is one of the many names given to "The Devil."

I love Queen!!

Anybody who considers Bohemian Rhapsody to be anything other than the complete drivel that it is is no fan of music.
It really is awful.
I'm glad to say that I do not care what it's about and even more glad that I am not on the same wavelength as somebody with such a predictable taste in music.

I've just seen the answer above mine and am laughing uncontrollably!!!

I reckon they just wanted to see how far they could go with a song about nothing and whether it would get anywhere. I'm glad to say it did!
