I've been sick for a week now, which I know isn't uncommon for a cold, but I've formed a deep, hacking cough and chest and throat pains. I started out with a stuffy, phlegmy nose and air passage, which I usually get with a cold, along with headaches and a cough. After about four days, the stuffiness, phlegm, and headaches have gotten a little better, but the cough has gotten worse. I went back to work yesterday and started getting sweats and chills off and on, and the cough is getting more and more painful, not only in my throat (which I'm sure is do to rawness), but in my chest and, what feels like my lungs.

I have no insurance, so I'd feel silly going to my doctor and wasting so much money over a cold...can anyone spare some advice?

sounds like your cold is just running it's course...

colds are viral and can take up to 14 days to finish their cycle.

just keep taking medications to treat your symptoms and to help you feel better. dayquil works good for during your work hours. at night take nyquil-it's best to go to sleep as early as possible so your body can get the extra rest it needs.

drink some warm tea w/honey (peppermint is my fav) or try some chicken soup....

if the cough isn't gone in another week or worsens-i would make an appointment to see the doctor.

things to watch for that would need a doctor visit asap are:

-if you start running a fever of 101.0 or higher
-you start to cough up phlegm from your lungs that is green or brown in color
-you become so congested in your chest that you are having trouble breathing or it hurts to breathe

these are symptoms of bronchitis which is an infection is the air passages inside your lungs and it will need antibiotics to treat it...

Try some warm tea with a little honey and lemon in it. That should help with the throat pain and the cough...For the chills and the rest of the symptoms, I would suggest going to any drug store and picking up some Sudafed for the day and some NyQuil for at night. Hope this helps and hope you feel better soon.

At this point, it would not be silly at all to go to the doc. It sounds like your cold progressed to bronchitis, and now even pneumonia.
Get to the doc soon, so you don't end up really sick and in hospital.
