A the moment, I think that Two and Half Men is the best. The writing is really sharp but without that typical sitcom formula of set up-set up-joke. The lines are unpredictable and the situations aren't as unrealistic and outrageous as some other shows. I love it that Charlie Sheen basically plays himself as a real dog of a guy but that his mother seems to out-dog him everytime and be even more scandalous. It takes a great bad character (like the mom) for us to sympathise with a guy like Charlie!

i used to love "Malcolm in the Middle" if that can be classed as one.
the plots in it and the amazing diversity of characters were so funny to watch and the situations were often so true to life - pure comedy if you got the right episode.
my favourite character would have to have been dewey or louis - they were just hilarious to watch.
i can't say what my favourite episode was really, they wer all brilliant, but i do have a certain few which crack me up every time.
its probably not the best american sitcom - but it alwasy did it for me. shame its not on so much now....

Becker- He's a cantankerous, ill tempered, misogynist. Just like me.
My favourite episode was when he sat at the station with an old woman who had lost her son in the 9/11 attack.
Very moving.

Seinfeld is a classic. Seasons 1-6 are the best, it sort of runs out of ideas near the end. Also Curb Your Enthusiasm, created by Larry David who also wrote Seinfeld.

I assume in your deletions of friends, frasier, cheers that we are also deleting seinfield? I've a more recent favorite with "Everybody Loves Raymond" and the older favorite
Roseanne! These shows are classics in todays times. I must admit I didn't like it when they won the lotto on Roseanne.

Seinfeld, favourite character George personifies selfish perfectly,
favourite episode "The rouges wallet" - incredibly contrived but as your watching it the whole plot flows forward in a seemless & credible manner.

Everybody Loves Raymond. Fantastic, my wife thinks the mother is just like mine. The best thing is Ray isnt the best thing about it, the brother, the mother and the dad are just brilliant.
