"I am proud of my country. I am proud to be an american".

Why do americans repeat this ad nauseum ?
Incidently, I am not anti-american. I just think that it is a fair question.

I like your question because it is something that puzzles me too, in a similar vein.
If we don't like our government and what they are doing, we say so - but the Americans still seem to adore their president regardless of what he does to them!
I'm not anti-American, either, but I can't understand their way of thinking and suspect that they are all brought up a little bit brain-washed by 'Uncle Sam.'

a definite yes to the first part of your question. and --ad nauseum-- is not correct, however they just repeat the same way they repeat "hello, how are you?" -- Mozart's music to the ears is also repeated and does not become ad nauseum.

Well, most of us are! We look around at the other countries and thank God we don't have to endure what the others do. Pick a country, other than the US, any country, and you can find the worst of the worst happening...there may be a few who are not burdened right now, but not many. God Bless America (please)!

People want their group to survive and prosper. America is our group and we want it to do well. This is normal and natural. Don't you root for your favorite sports team? Don't you want it to do well? Why would you not wish the same for your country?

There are reasons for being proud.

One talks about the land.

The other talks about the people.
