interesting question- you could end your paper with something along the lines of: maybe we will never really know the true reason for the shape of a starfish, for we could also ask the question, "why is a star in the sky not the shape of a star at all?"
Cute question. I suppose that God made him that way because he dwells on rocky areas and his shape allows flexibility to crawl over rocks without injury and to securely attach to rocks not to be washed away somewhere in the current. He can lift up one portion of his body to eat and still be stuck to the rock.

Maybe bacause it's invertebrate.....
Its rays can help it move steadily in the water.....
Or
Maybe when it's lost a ray,the ray can rejuvenate into new individual and continue survive.......
