Alphabetically? Authentication.

In a process? either, depending on the needs of the system.

Authentication is the process by which a user of a service identifies themselves to the access control that secures that service. Authentication is absolutely the first step in gaining access to a resource.

When the user is authenticated successfully the access control will then check to see if the particular user is authorized to read/write/modify the resource.

You may have an account to logon to a network (authentication) but you probably don't have rights (authorization) to every resource (file, service, etc.).

You have to authenticate first... (in some cases to check who you really are or say who you are...)
Then authorization is granted... (you are okayed to get or do what whatever you were trying to do...)
