The Exorcist was the scariest as far as the impact it had on audiences at the time it came out

"Silence of the Lambs", without a DOUBT. I made unbelievably bad judgment by sitting down to dinner one night (early 90's...'94, '95) to watch it on Showtime. I'd just started in on dinner...and then I watched the scene in which Lecter sat up in the ambulance gurney. BIG MISTAKE. The plate of food I had resting in my lap fell on to the carpet and I just sat there motionless. I didn't get sick but I COULD NOT MOVE. I actually had food dripping down my chin and I started trembling. My fork practically froze in my hand. Needless to say, I didn't get a wink of sleep that night.

yep. me too. in a way embarrassing 'cause I've seen LOTS of scary movies. But I just watched it again recently, and the Exorcist still contracts my sphincter.
