Gold is a metallic element with a characteristic yellow color, but can also be black or ruby when finely divided, while colloidal solutions are intensely colored and often purple. These colors are the result of gold's plasmon frequency lying in the visible range, which causes red and yellow light to be reflected, and blue light to be absorbed. Only silver colloids exhibit the same interactions with light, albeit at a shorter frequency, making silver colloids yellow in color.

Gold itself is a yellow metallic element but, in its pure form, it is too soft to be used for general jewellery purposes, although there are some cultures which do wear pure gold jewellery, it would need to be heavily made and carefully used. The yellow colour of gold is caused by gold absorbing violet and blue light, but reflecting yellow and red light.

The perception of colour is down to the absorbtion of energy within the visible spectrum or the emittance of energy within the same spectrum. If the object reflects light incident upon it, then the colour is due to the absorption of all energy wavelengths apart from that colour that you perceive. Thus plants are green because they do not absorb in the yellow-green area of the spectrum. Why do materials appear coloured? The energy they absorb from the electromagnetic spectrum is used to promote electrons to higher energy states. This strips colour from the spectrum. When the electrons return to the native energy state, they may release energy in the visible spectrum (even if they did not originally absorb energy in this area) and you percieve the colour based upon those frequencies of light.
