That's only one element of intelligence. It's what you can do with the knowledge you remember that really makes you smart.

Intelligence is a mere application of knowledge... ever saw a one year old solving a social problem.A smart person is one who intelligently applies the known knowledge to a specific problem. So good memory is essential but remember that having bad memory doesnt mean u r not smart coz what appears to b forgotten is not always forgotten , our brain always keep the most essential part n only forgets the useless one, we usually dont realise this but always remember that a problem resolved by u twenty years ago ,u might not remember that but ur brain does n u will find urself real smart in that while doing that again , but again , with good memory n req. intelligence , u will always do it better that someone with same intelligence but ineffective memory ............hope u understand that good memory n intelligence r both gifts of God n both toghether make up for smartness............

If you remember incorrect information really well that does not make you smart. Intelligence is not measured by memory retention. Learning how to distinguish good knowledge from bad is a mark of intelligence .

not really, being smart is how you use what you know to do or say something, you might remember or know alot of stuff but lack the skill of using them, so you aren't smart then....:)

but your question is smart anyway....

It's certainly part of it. Hard to improve at anything if you can't remember what's gone before. IMHO.
