The bible in places is very symbolic. It uses time differently, so when it talks of seven days of creation, if you look at other scriptures it mentions that Gods time is very different to our view of time. So what we are looking at is seven distinct periods of time. How he created the earth and all thats in it is actually in accord with scientific views. It is only the seven day stumbling block that most people discount, and rightly so!
I am a science nut, and a firm beliver in God. The only thing in science I do discount is that we can from apes. This is just a theory and has not ever been proven.
How God formed the earth, i'e the Big Bang, natural selection, etc in not in contradiction to the bible, if you don't take the time periods literally.
Gen1.1-31, Rev12:14 2Pet3:8 for example of different time usage. Hope this helps

It's a shame to see so many people confused about who they are. They look at "theories" and "religions", and they project all their thoughts about the world on the external. Doesn't anyone realise, that whether your a hardcore scientist or a bible thumper, what you believe (yes, if you are a scientist, you still "believe" in a theory) is what you are! Look at yourself, and if you think the mere fact of your existence is by pure random chance, then you might as well kill yourself because your life has no meaning...

People are so confused about the difference between religion and spirituality. It seems that when people really start thinking about life, and come to the conclusion that at one point there was a "prime mover" or "divine initiation" by whatever type of "creator", they immediately look to religious dogma's as therefore being the answer! "Look, I just proved to myself that God exists, so what religion will I now sign up for?"

In the same way you came to the conclusion of immanence within your own thought-process, the rest of the answers are within you, not in what people have been screaming to be the truth ever since. They are merely the antithesis of the "rationalist" thesis, and now is the time to acknowledge that YOU are the SYNTHESIS. In synthesis-thinking, you'll realise that there is truth in everything, but each perspective is veiled in it's own short-sightedness. This is why you shouldn't adhere to "just darwinism" or "just creationism". Neither are right (by the way, there is a HUGE difference between evolution and Darwinism... the former is the fact, the latter is the belief labelled as absolute).

I suggest that people who are interested in searching for truth look into every possible field of knowledge, especially quantum physics and relativity (Synthesis= String Theory). Once you've learned the nature of "matter" and it's relationship to consciousness, you'll find out how inanimate material can come together in "irreducible complexity" (look this up!!!) to form... YOU!

Remember, just because you think there is Something going on in the big picture, doen't mean that you are automatically a New Ager or have to look at the religious dogmas that exist around the world. If there were any beneficial truth in those throughout history, then history wouldn't have gone the way is has (seeing as these religious folk have been the shapers of what we today call "history").

Think independantly! You cannot think independantly by subjecting yourself to one system of ideas, nor can you fully understand your inner immanence through intelectual brain-teasing. You cannot "know" what love is, you can only "feel" what it is. Your humanity gives you the key to true wisdom, not the obsessive rational "holier-than-thou" adherence to a group of people or ideas where you feel safe.

We call ourselves "social beings'. I believe this idea has come from the development of the "group-mentality". If you feel you have to be a part of what other people are thinking, you will never break out of any "box", no matter how big it is.

One love

A majority of the American public. Religious nutcases have managed to convince people that there are serious doubts about Evolution by Natural Selection. It is a scientific theory at least as well established as Heliocentrism (Earth revolves around Sun).

The evidence (fossil record, geology, age of the Earth, genetics and DNA studies, etc. etc.) all point to species evolving from common ancestry. By contrast, so-called Intelligent Design neither has supporting evidence of its own nor does it explain satisfactorily the above-mentioned evidence.

20 years from now, Americans will look back and wonder who lost the biotech revolution to Europe and Asia. The answer will be the Christian fundies who made sure our kids learned a load of nonsense instead of the cornerstone of modern biology.

First of all, I believe in evolution. And unlike most (especially catholics), I am highly open minded and will try to reson things out rather that do what most chatolics do when it comes to god. As in go crazy and yell out that god DOES exist and that there is no other way but their way, without having proof of it.

Anyway, god/religion/bible and evolution do not contridict at all. We already know that everything on earth evolved to come to its current state in evolution. And we have proof of this. One the other hand, the bible, which was propably written by people that didn't have quite the IQ we have today, nor did they have the resorces to get proof of certain things. The bible doesn't mention dinosaurs, bacteria...anything from the prehistoric periods for that matter.

You would say "because they didnt have the resorces that time". Thats exactly what i'm saying, they couldn't find out where we came from or what we came from so the propably invented that theory of GOD. And of course, even today, there are still unsolved mysteries, like the 'big question', "where did the universe come from". Sience hasn't found this out yet, but they keep trying to find out, not rely on some fake god and hope he aids me in every need.

And faith... what is faith? A small child believing that there's a monster under his bed, thats 'faith'.... but is it true? no.
I could believe that my bedroom door is made of candy!...true? no. All i'm saying faith is nothing without proof, and proof can go on just as fine without faith. Just because you have faith in something, doesn't mean that something literally exists.

If got 2 more question for you chatolics:

1) If you where born and lived in a, let's say, a society of buddhists, and a family of buddisths... what will you be today?

2) Is it because you truely believe? Or is it because you where raised that way?

I have huge problems with this very thing with my ten year old son. He is highly intelligent and has always questioned everything. From the moment he started school and they began teaching religious education he was sceptical and demanded proof of everything they told him. The teachers agreed (thankfully) that his scientific mind had the right to question them and tried to expain the concept of 'faith' to him along with rationalising the stories. Then, at age six we (the class) went to the Natural History Museum and saw the Darwin exhibition. He looked in awe at the big bang theory display then quietly read all the evidence showing evolution. He thought for a while then announced loudly "So, the bible IS wrong then". His teacher laughed and said that one day he'd understand. I'm still waiting for that day. The older he gets the more scientific his mind gets. He is still 'made' to take part in R.E of course, and he is respectful of beliefs but I don't think I'll hold my breath waiting for him to convert. He can see and understand evolution but The Bible? Unexplainable.

People who don't have a clue what evolutionary theory really says don't believe in it. They pay no attention to what scientists say about evolution, they get their information from creationists.

Creationists also believe that "theory" means "any halfassed idea". It doesn't. To be accepted as a theory in science requires tons of evidence and peer review. Therefore, creationism is not even a theory.

If evolution should be supplanted by another theory, another scientific theory will replace it, one that explains the evidence better; not "god did it".

even fundamentalists don't fully disbelieve in evolution, they merely reconstruct the facts, so far uncovered, to fit the Bible .. in truth there is little evidence to suggest that, apart from the time table, the Bible and evolution are different .. one involves the belief in a Supreme Being the other in a Supreme Chance .. me personally, I can find a lot more interesting things to concern myself with than a spurious discussion on matters which can never be resolved

First off, I believe in evolution. The question is whether a "religious figure" implant the evolution systems into living beings.

Then which god we are talking about. Are we focusing on the God dicsussed in christianity and muslim ?

If so, there are some discrepancy in their documents about the real world we are in.

I don't believe in evolution. There is no possible way to truly believe in both God and evolution. If you believe in God and the Bible, then evolution is a completely far fetched theory that no rational person could even think of believing.

Quote "far fetched theory that no rational person could even think of believing."
That is exactly what I think about the bible story about everything being created in 6 days. What a load of old nonsense.

Mrsdanieljackson,
Your son sounds exactly like I was at 10 years old. I even remember showing my (then) new book of prehistoric animals to our local vicar ( preacher) when he visited my school."what do you think to this compared to the Adam and Eve story? I asked . He smiled at me and meekly replied "Well Roy, these days I think we can call ' Adam and Eve' a fairy story !" That was during the 1960's in England! If I go into yahoo answers UK only page, nobody asks questions like the above.
The way we look at things had to change as soon as man decided to put two lenses in the same field of view. Galileo looked through his telescope and said "we are not the centre of the universe after all " ( The catholics nearly had him murdered for saying that at the time ) Robert Hooke looked down his microscope and realised there was still a heck of a lot to learn about life and its humble beginnings.
