Scanning the document is really the only option, just remember to keep a copy on your machine so you can see the quality of the scans and if your friend does not receive it correctly you can try again. Also back it up onto disk or usb pen then you wont have to carry a bulk load of paper with you everywhere (as long as you have access to a computer that is). If its a really big file don't forget that a lot of email are restricted on size so you may end up splitting it up, usually 10 Mbs or less is fine.

Scan and e-mail.
If you don't have a scanner but have access to a fax machine then you could send it by e-fax. To do this sign up for a free e-fax trial by going here:
http://home.efax.com/s/r/gen-efax-plus5?VID=38867&CMP=KNC-38867FreeFax

then fax the document to the E-fax number you created. This will send the fax, by e-mail to the e-mail you signed up with. You will receive an e-mail with an attachment that is your document. Forward this document to your friend and they can open it and get the document you sent..

Seems you're not 'pc literate'. Most people use laptop/computer to 'write' just about everything these days...the type writer is history man.....wake up!!
You could always 'type it' in to MSWord or other word processing package. then attach it to your email..but I imagine I'm already talking in gibberish for you...!

Go to Staples, get them to scan it & send it to your 'buddy' in the US..

Of course you will need his/hers email address....not their postal address..

What a dummy you are
