and/or direction.

I dont feel it would be right for me to claim to follow a religon i dont actually believe to be true, not to mention it strikes me as a slight bit cowardly. To be afraid of what i truly believe and just follow anything else just because its more comforting : /.

A lot of people (agnost, atheist, but also existentialist) believe it is possible to live a meaningfull live without religion. Even though I am Christian myself, I do believe it is possible. There is something utterly true in that you say it is cowardly to turn to religion because you need to fill this void. I am not a preacher, nor do I promote certain system of beliefs, but I believe that religion should be used as a path to God, however not to give you a purpose in life.

I think that the first thing you should do is enjoy the little things in life. Enjoy a cup of coffee, sports, your friends and family. Take care of your body as it was a temple. Enjoy food. Apreciate what your senses are telling you. But also straighten your ethical believs, you should define for yourself what is right and what is wrong. A man without morals is no man, he is an animal.

Then as a colleague said already. Find something you like and what you are good at. Enjoy your daily routines. Make a habit out of being a great person. Routines are very important, make sure doing good becomes a routine.

You can always still turn to religion when you believe you need to fill that spiritual void. But dont use religion to fill a existential void.

I guess we all have to find our own higly personal solution to that - and, in the long run, after a lot of trial and error, also find that automatically.

There are so many periods in life that existence seems totally pointless. But then I think that, since I am here anyway, I am still curious to see how the story ends, and that I can better make the best of it.

I found that doing what you are good at, to use those capacities you have and try to develop them, is the best direction towards inner peace.

I truly believe it is impossible! Religion is a very frightening thing to anybody who has been raised in our culture, that is unless they've had experience with a good church. I think we are born with a "God shaped hole" in our hearts that can only be filled by him. Go out there are explore some religions and you may find one you can "tolerate". They have all got websites now! Of course I personally recommend Christianity it has offered by great comfort through life's trials and great purpose too! If you are an "academic" type--I am--I recommend reading "Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis or "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel. The C.S. Lewis books offers explanations of Christian theology. The Strobel book offers scientific and historical evidence for Christ and the Bible. Both authors spent a great deal of their adult lives as ardent atheists.

I tried to be happy without religion for 10 years of my adult life and finally gave up! I've returned to Christianity for the last six years and have never been happier or more satisfied in my life!

Basically, you can't. The bible says that God created "eternity in our hearts", meaning that there is a void in our lives that can ONLY be filled by God Himself.

Many people go through lives without God. They are always trying to fill the void with activities, objects, work, etc. They'd say that "life is like that: live, study, work, grow old, die". These people live with no purpose in life. When you find your purpose in life (you can only find it when you've filled the void with God), then life truly is lived to its fullest and a satisfaction comes that's beyond words.
