An inferiority complex, in the fields of psychology and psychoanalysis, is a feeling that one is inferior to others in some way. It is often unconscious, and is thought to drive afflicted individuals to overcompensate, resulting either in spectacular achievement or extreme antisocial behaviour. Unlike a normal feeling of inferiority, which can act as an incentive for achievement, an inferiority complex is an advanced state of discouragement, often resulting in a retreat from difficulties.

In psychology, it is the term used to describe a complex or cluster of repressed fears. It was originally described by Alfred Adler. He based his ideas on physical inferiority.
Over time the term has gained popularity, now being used to describe general feelings of inferiority and the overcompensation that often ensues.

Good question and a term too loosely used sometimes. I still have all of my report cards. In my grade one report card "comments" section, the teacher wrote that she thought I had "an inferiority complex". I was just shy. Go figure.
