It's important for humans to get back out into space looking for alternatives. We are well on our way to destroying ourselves and the species needs an insurance policy. No less than Stephen Hawking has recently said the same. We could as well be destroyed by a global catastrophy - there are several in the fossil record MORE devastating than the famous Cretaceous extinction (dinosaurs).

We still have much to learn about the moon. There are things we can build on the moon such as high speed telescopes that don't have to fight through our atmosphere. Imagine Hubble only a thousand times better. Scientific research. Supplies for the space station could be stored. Plant growth could be monitored and better studies can be made of how they react in zero gravity. New science could unlock cures for diseases here on earth.
It would also be a good place to start a trip to Mars. Currently it takes massive amounts of fuel to break through our atmosphere. If we want to send humans to Mars then that would be a good sendoff point.
We need to know once and for all: Is the moon made of cheese or not.
