I need to set up a table-like thing outside for Halloween decoration. It rains here a lot, so cardboard wouldn't work.
Ideally, the box would be a little above waist-high on its longest side, and have right angles (not weird curves like a plastic storage bin). Stuff would sit on top, with maybe some cloth draped artistically down the sides.
A wooden shipping crate would be perfect, except that it turns out they're nearly $100! I'm trying to NOT spend a lot of money, here....
I could alter something else to be a box, if I could just figure out what to alter.
Help?
Any ideas?

you could try to make a box yourself with some wood, nails and a hammer from your local hardware store. or check your local paper or craigs list to see if anyone is giving away free plywood or anything else you might be able to use. sometimes people may give away an old table they aren't using, or sell it for cheap. or check out discount stores like ross or tjmax for a cheap table. good luck!!

Wal-mart has those plastic stackable crates, like the old milk crates that are probably less than $5.00 a piece. Target has them to. If you needed something real long you could get 4 crates and an old piece of plywood. You could probably get the plywood for free if you are in a place where there are some construction sites around. Plywood is not that expensive anyway.

Buy a big board from home depot or some thing then go to a hard wear store and buy some thing that will hold it up and if you didn't "damage it" in any way you can go back and get a refund for it and just say it wasn't what you needed.

Most lumberyards will have some pallets that they will give you for free... you can use one or more of these to make your storage bin. Or, you could purchase some lumber, and/or plywood to create what you want. I'd go with screws tho, myself, rather than nails.
Have Fun!

Go to your local lumber yard or Lowe's and tell them what you want. They may have just the thing free. They have a lot of palletes and things that their lumber comes in and on.

Sounds like a job for an old door - plus a couple sawhorses!
You can nail the door to the sawhorses, for stability.
Throw a drape over it all.
After the holiday, pull out the nails, and retrieve your sawhorses.

I would just go to home depot and check out the scrap pile and buy some nails and make one. That's the cheapest way I know.
