Hello, just today I happened to read about Torrent on Yahoo! Answers and I decided to install it, and I like it a lot. I will be using it to downloading "hard to find" media (old songs, movies etc..). I installed Azureus and Java, and I also read about this web site, Minerva... I was able to understand that this whole Torrent concept rotates around file sharing.

My question is, by having installed Torrent, did I automatically connect my computer to a chain of computers and did I give the authorization to other Torrent users to be able to download the material on my computer? As media, word documets etc... ? Will they be able to download my documents, passwords etc...? Is yes, is there a way to be able to just download and not UPload?

In addition, what are the other safety risks I am going through using this program? Thank you.

To answer your question in a nutshell, bittorrent is a standard. Now, that does not mean anything now a days, because every standard has been found to be almost unsafe from http, smtp, bittorrent, and other technologies out there.

There is a great wikipedia article that offers you a comprehensive list of bittorrent clients that are "safe" and "unsafe".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_BitTorrent_clients

Second part of your question regards to files that are being shared. That is quite the neat thing with bittorrent. Only xyz.torrent files will be shared on the net. When you install the bittorrent application it will ask you where to store the partial files and where you would like to store the completed file. Only this file will be available until you decide to remove it and stop sharing it.

It is not like other P2P applications that ask you to select a folder to share all the files in it, and the entire folder is compromised if you begin to put word documents and sensitive documents in it.

You should always allow an UPLOAD / DOWNLOAD ratio, in order to get the best download speed. In other words, bittorrent is a "tit for tat" kind of application where you "normally" get what you put in.

*****First off, before you do anything else, go to http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/
and download PeerGuardian and set it to automatically run in the background whenever your computer is on to block bad IP addresses. (this is good for any file sharing program) After you download it, open it up from your toolbar and click the button that says "Allow HTTP". That's all you have to do, the program takes care of itself.

Secondly, unlike P2P programs, Bittorent does not share files from your computer, except for torrent files that you allow it to share. While you are downloading, you will also be sharing. Once you have downloaded the file and shared it 100% the file will automatically stop sharing. (you can make it share as long as you want, but 100% is the minimum) Also, Bittorent will only share files while you have the program running. If you don't have the program open and running (on the screen or on the taskbar) then nothing is being shared at all.

If you find that Azureus takes up too much processing power, (Java programs tend to do that) uninstall it and install
http://www.utorrent.com/
instead. It's a fast torrent program that doesn't take up to much computing power.

I have used Bittorent for a few years now and have had no security problems what-so-ever. I haven't gotten any viruses, or downloaded porn by accident, or had the FBI kick down my door. A good site for finding torrent files to download is

If you download only but not contribute that called leeching.
Dont worry only the files that you downloaded are to be shared and they completely save as long as you got antivirus on your syatem. Trojan are no 1 in p2p.
