Star Wars is brilliant. I love sci-fi because it extrapolates our institutions and beliefs into future potentialities. By "institutions", I mean family, education, government, politics/military/power structures, faith, technology, science, commerce, etc. Most sci-fi extrapolates the perceived set of "constant" human beliefs and social meanings into the future or into an alternative reality. Once there, the sci-fi writer then juxtapositions that set of "constant" human beliefs and meanings against our instituions, as they may have changed or advanced. Sci-fi basically chews on that function. Star Trek remains the poster boy for that kind of social sci-fi. Sci-fi is "theater", which is a social device humans use to examine themselves and their beliefs, an examination of issues and feelings, oftentimes of issues that their society isn't quite ready to publically talk about. Star Trek was great theater. When the orginal series was first airing, the U.S. was in violent throes of racial unrest and violence over white and black human skin pigmentations. Everyone was yelling at each other, killing each other. No one dared to discuss the issue without fear of inciting riots and explosions of pent up misunderstandings. Back then, VERY few blacks were even in TV commercials, yet. It was rare and shocking to see a mere woman, better yet a mere BLACK woman as an officer on the bridge of the spaceship Enterprise. But, Star Trek helped this nation to work through some of our beliefs and feelings about rascism. The theater of Star Trek, especially being "dismissed and frivilous" sci-fi, was a safe place to discuss, so to say, the dangerous social issues of the day. Society loves its theater and the socially therapeutic purpose it serves, but, when theater goes too far and steps too gingerly upon the beliefs and feelings and meanings of the powers that be in that society, the theater is shut down, as was Star Trek, which was partly due to a scene with Capt. Kirk apparently putting his boots back on from the side of his bed after having had sex with a black woman, I believe. Most sci-fi, unfortunately focuses on only two institutions, technology and politics/military/power structures. That kind of sci-fi dwells upon the machines and weapons and power struggles that might hail from the technology and the politics/military/power structures that we have today. Star Trek certainly entertained well with its extrapolations of tech and power. But, Star Trek was all about the institution of faith, I believe. Its message was one of hope and belief in a possible good future, that we humans were going to make it, and with some dignity left over. Now, on to Star Wars. Star Wars is especially brilliant theater. It is pure "Greek Tragedy". What I think is brilliant about Star Wars . . . to discuss its form of artistic expression vs the pleasure of the story . . . is that Lucus alters the function of institutions and our set of "constant" human beliefs and feelings. He uses TODAY's set of beliefs and feelings (it was written in the here-and-now), places that set into an alternate reality with the advanced, extrapolated institutions from OUR world in place there (mostly tech, power and faith (Jedi)), and he then uses ancient Greek Tragedy theater themes ( father/son / good/evil / fate/destiny), against a background loaded with examples of every stage of human and social development AND from every known civilization AND runs every institution he could think of through its historical developmental stages from the beginning of history and into the future a bit, though, not well done, AND, he then releases the six part story in an backward way with the last three parts showing first and then the first parts showing from the beginning. Lucas was attempting, I believe, to shake up the function itself by creating an ultimate or enriched alternative reality in which the viewer could innovatively perceive the issue of Good and Evil. As for who is my favorite character, it isn't Leia, but only due to an image that haunts me of my daughter going to school in the 80's with those really stupid braided ear buns. Yoda owns my heart, for a reptile-like scaly thing.

I love Star Wars! It's my favorite thing in this world. I love all of the movies! I also read Star Wars books, listen to Star Wars audiobooks, read Star Wars comic books, and I would someday like to get a subscription to Star Wars Insider, the Star Wars magazine. I also like to visit Star Wars websites such as starwars.com and Wookiepedia, the Star Wars wiki.

Star Wars is my favourite thing ever. Since you asked 8 years ago, I watched the clone wars, which I love. Star Wasr is the greatest example of humans. The rise of the Sith Empire is so sad, but it wasn't the first. My favourite movie is the third, for being so sad, and the action, betrayal and deaths. My favourite character in the 6 movies would be Obi-Wan.

Long, drawn out, lame, and over-rated. Gives me the idea that George Lucas was obsessed with good vs. evil. Hey, we should camp out in front of the theater a week before it opens, then let's all go to the STAR WARS convention and play with our ACTION FIGURES!! I am more interested in cartoons and cereal with prizes inside the box.
