Well, I dont know about insects or fish etc. but I certainly can tell you that dogs and cats and many other mammals have emotions. What the person before me said about animals only having "programmed" responses is unproven, while many animals do have basic programmed reactions like we do they also learn from thier experiences and that shapes the way they later act behaviour cannot be shaped without feeling. The reason there is so little actual studies about animal emotions is because scientists are afraid of being ridiculed for Anthropomorphism (ascribing human emotions to animals) this to me is ridiculous because it really isnt that.... it is only because we have no other words to describe a feeling. When I say my dog is "sad" I am not saying he feels sad like humans do but that he feels sad like dogs do, it may be different than our emotions but the meaning is the same. Dogs in fact are more emotionally honest than people are, human emotions are often masked or lied about, while a dog immediately shows thier emotions. For example, if a dog dislikes someone they never pretend to like them in order to benefit, humans do. As for that being programmed, well if you think about it that assertion makes no sense... If all dogs are only programmed to do certain things in response to stimuli, than all dogs would react the exactly the same to a particular stimulus. Anyone who has a dog knows this to be untrue.. why would one dog like a certain person but another doesnt? could it be that one dog FEELS differently about that person?? I think so and having lived with animals of all kinds and especially dogs, I can tell you without the shadow of a doubt that most animals can FEEL if not the same as us, close enough for me to be able to see it and understand without thought. I have SEEN dogs feel like we do, and it is not anthropomorphism, it is observation and yes instinct... You have only to truly share your life with an animal and you will know they feel emotions. I cannot disapprove enough of the 2 programmed statements above, they have obviously never had a relationship with an animal and are not qualified to speak. I ask, how can dogs have individual personalities if they do not feel emotions?? If all reactions are programmed, then why is there such a difference in every dog? How is it that being all programmed with the same responses to stimuli that every dog will act entirely different in any given situation, how can you explain that away with "instinct"?? You cant because it is clear the reason is that each dog reacts differently is because they all feel differently in the same situation. Some dogs are afraid of strangers, other greet them like old friends and apparently feel affection for everyone. How is that programming?? I dont believe animals have emotions I KNOW they do maybe not all of them do but certainly dogs, cats, horses and cows all feel emotions because I have seen it and felt it myself, coming from them. How?? well I guess I am just "programmed" that way.....

Animals don't have emotions, they have preprogrammed reactions to stimulli. When you feed them, they lick you. When you hit them they bite you. Some animals can be trained to respond in a particular way, but they are only reactng to certain stimulii (usually food) again.
To have emotions you need a highly developed fore-brain better known as the frontal lobe. Animals, except for some apes, don't have these areas developed enough to have cognition. Sorry to burst your bubbles everybody.
Some people sure have some strange ideas out there.
Remember Humans have emotions and animals have preprogramed responses. There is no emotion in them, they do everything to a program.

No, Some animals have emotions, monkeys and gorillas will grieve the death of a baby, so will certain animals grieve for a lost baby, but not the same as a human, when a lion kills a zebra, l don't think it feels compassion.

I won't kill any animal and try to teach my children the same. SO when spiders and moths are found in my home (screams heard from my girls) we remove from the home and not harm.
I say they are all gods creatures, and all creatures great and small has a right to live-they live so feel

No. Animals have different physiology and environments than we do. While some animals may respond to stimuli in similar ways (pain, fear, depression) it would be imposible for them to feel it the same way.
People like to give animals human characteristics so they feel more "conected" to them. That's why you hear people say things like, "my dog loves me". But you never hear people say, "I think the earthworms in my garden hate me".

Yes. The difference is the way they comunicate those feelings. Sometimes humans are too dumb to pick up on it!

the basic ones yes: sadness, happiness, love, excitement, boredom, etc. But they probably experience them differently than we do and during different situations. Animals can even experience jealousy and anger.
