Hey nicole, I understand the point you're making here. I have brown skin, but society calls me "black". And all through my life I have been made fun of, because I didn't act ghetto like the television and "Hip-Hop Culture" tell us to do. Throughout school...I tried to fit in with the group that society wants us to be in. I even changed the way I dressed...to try and fit in with the "Hip-Hop" crowd. But, as I grew older...I realised that, I am who God has created me to be....and no one can change that. And, that I'm unique and have my own set of values and beliefs.
Throughout american history, "blacks" have been given the character, that we should act a certain way and think a certain way. Like in the 70s, Television portrayed "blacks" to speak with a groovy speech, and walk with a groovy walk. You had to do this, to be considered, "A brotha". When we got to the 80's and 90's, the Hip-Hop culture came in, and changed eveything completely. And, brought in even more stereotypes. Like you have to become a rapper to become rich ,or you have to be gansta like "Scarface" to get to the top.
This combined with what we see on television and what we listen to in music. The Cosby Show attemped to break the stereo-type of "ghetto blacks", by putting Cosby in the position of playing the part of a "black successful doctor".
But, this show only gave hope to a minority. When "Hip-Hop blacks" see someone who is intelligent...someone who dresses in non Hip-Hop clothing, and someone who speaks with a perfect english; they tend to become confused ,and see you as a traiter and a" white" person. Mainly because, the "whites" are potrayed as the only ones who are able to become successful. On top of that, we still have this bitterness about whites and slavery, that will not go away. But, let's face the facts here, whites do have an advantage in society, and any other race has to work a lot harder than they do. That's why it comes as a surprise, when "blacks" see another "black" who doesn't act the way that they do.
I'm a young intelligent strong male, who is not apart of the "Hip-Hop culture". I'm mixed with Cherokee, African, and Caurcasian...but america calls me a "black american" as a category. Rap Music is not the only option for me, I like all type of genres of music! Music that is positive and not negetive. I dress the way I want to dress, and I can wear old navy or gap clothing if I want to. I hate to be grouped together like cattle...but society does it.
It has been said, "People are like sheep, when a few people in the group change their style, the remaining sheep change right along with them." Stereotypes are the cause of many problems we have in the world today. People expect you to act a certain way and think a certain way. Like "whites" are supposed to be racist, asians are supposed to be automatically smart, hispanics are automatically immigrants, and blacks are supposed to be loud and illiterate.
So, we try to be what society tells us to be ,and we look up to the leaders of that certain "Stereotypical Group in society. Like the "blacks" looking up to millionaire rap artists. This gives the idea that "blacks" can act ghetto, and still become rich like everyone else. Which in truth, we must prepare ourselves, to be accepted into the "career system", not practice our rapping skills. I'm not saying "Hip-Hop Blacks" don't become successful in this system, I'm just saying a majority of us have this mindset, that we can get somewhere without educating ourselves.
We will never learn about the "blacks" that were successful and intelligent leaders....I mean, was Martin Luther King ghetto? Was Rosa Parks a whore? Was Frederick Douglass gansta??? What about Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods? Do they act ghetto? These are two of the most successful athletes in history...and they are not white or ghetto? But, it's sad that the black race has forgotten them, and they now look up to people like Nelly, 50 cent, Beyonce' Knowles, and Eminem.
I hope one day we can all snap out of it ,and realise that we are all different and uniquely made. If I had the choice to change my skin color, I wouldn't. Nothing will stop me from becoming who I want to be. I do not need the approval of society, to tell me if I should be successful or not...Regardless of the color of my skin, but I do know that I must adjust and act like the successful side of society, to get somewhere. And, the key is...higher education.
Thank you for bringing this up!

You know what? Some lotions have bleaching chemicals in them...and falsely gives skin a "brightness" and "freshness" because it lightens the skin. Tell your friend to use pure grape seed oil. It tones the skin and enhances the beauty without harsh chemicals. I cannot say if this oil gets rid of dark spots...it should since it tones. It's therapeutic for skin. No to those creams. But the oil, and tell me how she likes it. :)

Social standards? Are you trying to be white? The only standard I see here is a messed up head. You don't need a doctor you need your head examined. Be proud of who you are. Don't be an idiot and end up like Michael Jackson. Even if change your skin color to white, your children will still come out dark. You think that is fair?

With the greatest respect you may want to have a discussion with your doctor, or psychiatrist first. You obviously have some issues which you need to talk through, and you should have nothing but pride for whatever colour your skin is - you are a human being, quite simply the most perfect physical being in the known universe!!

This truly hurts my heart that you feel this way about yourself. There is nothing wrong with dark skin. i have always envied darker skinned women. I think dark skin is rich and beautiful and warm. God didn't make any mistakes when he made you and you really need to appreciate that. Someone must be making you feel bad about your complexion. Don't listen to them. Baby girl, get some self esteem and self worth, because changing your skin color won't change you. You know why? Wherever you go, there you are. Be happy.

YOU CANT. You wanna look like michael jackson?
You should check into a therapist so you can find out why you have self hate for who you are at this point in your life. SCREW SOCIAL STANDARDS. unless you live in a Klan camp.. you have NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT. If some one rejects you on skin color alone, you dont want to know that person.
SEEK MENTAL HELP NOW and love yourself for WHO YOU ARE...

Sorry darling, I do not believe that there is a "surgery" to lighten your skin tone.
Everyone knows about skin lightening creams, and I know why you arent so gun ho about using it.
But do you know about skin lightening pills? You wont have to worry about missing spots, and discoloration either.
I know how you feel sometimes, if white people and others can darken their skin, why can't we lightening ours.
