do NOT get DDR2 your old 256 DDR memory won't work with it and your motherboard won't either: 2.66 is an odd speed for a P4, likeley it's a Celeron D on an Intel Nimitz motherboard, so you *could* theoretically see more speed dollar for dollar by going to priceline.com and buying more Ghz. in a new socket 478 CPU and selling the old one on eBay.
also:
It should hold at least one more 512Mb-1Gb of (PC3200 to PC4200)?

any good antivirus program (AVG free, Norton, McAfee should automatically keep the OS free of junk but have you defragged the registry/drive lately?

don't replace the mainboard unless you're ready to reinstall the OS...

If it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it!

Get a 512MB RAM. If tha doesn't fix the problem, and you have had your Windows on for more than a year, consider a reformat session. Windows system slows down as time goes by. Refer to a person who knows how to do it, and make sure, before you go on, you still have all the drivers and the original Windows CD with you. You won't want to install a wrong driver; it'll be a fiasco.

i dont think that you problem would be about the ram. check if your windows is infected with viruses spywares worm and these kind of stuff if not try a registry mechanic yourwindows files maybe injured believe me i do it many time and it become right again. i dont think that your computer would need a ram if it is not below 512 and if it is more thatn 256 you it is still unnecesarry to bye one. but if it is less than 256 better think about bringing it up to at leas 512. hey but try the methode i said it would worth it.

Dont jump to change the gear box at first instance of any Problem.
Increasing RAM should be your last resort.Check the working environment of Your computer. Some sneaky virus might be the cause .Defragment yor hard disk. This might improve speed.

In my oppion, it depends on the type of game you are playing. The newer the game the more ram required. I would add 1 gig at least if not more. You can never have too much ram

256 mb is quite low in this day and age ....you need to find out what max amount your motherboard will take ...check the makers web site .........but you can safely increase the amount to 516mb which will make a big difference to the running of the computer ........
