There will never be any progress unless you take steps to go forward in life. You may take one step back but you still are one step closer to your goal. It's about having hope that even though you took a step back, you are still ahead of where you were in the first place because you were able to take two steps forward and only one step back.

Actually the saying is one step forward and two steps back...it means no matter how hard you try you just can't seem to get ahead.

Or think of it as losing two pounds, but then gaining one back.

I think it means sometimes we are afraid of moving on. We start to move ahead two steps but then something pulls us back.
