Most writers get 10% of the retail price of the book, (less agents fees if they used one of those bloodsuckers!) They get paid only on the books that are sold. Unsold books may be returned to the publisher so the author has to wait to see how many come back.

Writers get paid usually every quarter, sometimes only three times a year.

Rowling has sold so many books that, although, the royalties are a small percentage, she made a lot of money.

Good autors, like her, can sometimes increase the royalty figure to 15%, maybe 16%. Not more than that though.

I don't know the value of film rights or merchandise.

I believe that Rowling used an agent (vampire) to sell her first book.

Writers don't get very much royalty-wise, actually. It depends on the terms of the contract, but it's normally less than 20%, I believe.

Of course, when you consider the sheer volume of sales we're talking here...and I'm not sure on merchandising. But normally the writer gets a much larger cut when movie rights are sold--that's a one-shot deal, though; sell the rights and whoever has them gets the money from that point on.

She will get most from the books, but the films and merchandise, she wont get much, only the use of the name HP. The films rights were sold to WB, and so they make the most profits from the films.
