HTML = Hyper Text Markup Language is a markup language which is very popualr over web. It is used to show contents of your webpage and it's not any Programming Language. You can't do even a simple math addition using HTML.
It is used to Tag ur contents on the wegpage hence its codes are called TAGS or HTML Tags.
Feel free to contact me for more details and how to work on it.

In computing, HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a markup language designed for the creation of web pages with hypertext and other information to be displayed in a web browser. HTML is used to structure information — denoting certain text as headings, paragraphs, lists and so on — and can be used to describe, to some degree, the appearance and semantics of a document. HTML's grammar structure is the HTML DTD that was created using SGML syntax.
Originally defined by Tim Berners-Lee and further developed by the IETF, HTML is now an international standard (ISO/IEC 15445:2000). Later HTML specifications are maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
Early versions of HTML were defined with looser syntactic rules which helped its adoption by those unfamiliar with web publishing. Web browsers commonly made assumptions about intent and proceeded with rendering of the page. Over time, the trend in the official standards has been to create an increasingly strict language syntax; however, browsers still continue to render pages that are far from valid HTML.
The evolution of HTML continues through its XML based counterpart XHTML, XHTML applies the less ambiguous syntax of XML to HTML to make it easier to process and maintain. While continuing to publish the HTML 4.01 recommendation, the W3C now focuses its attention on development of HTML's XHTML successor.

HTML-Hyper Text Markup Language
You dont need to install any softwares...just type the code in notepad and save it with extension ".html" and run it in Internet Explorer...You can find good tutorials for it in www.w3schools.com... also try learning it from the textbook HTML 4.0 ...this language is the basis for all web based applications...if you find it difficult to write the code use MS-FrontPage which allows you to position the GUI's(buttons, textboxes etc) in the editor and it fills in the code for you...you just have to edit it for small events to take place...reading HTML doesnt find you good offers...try studying JSP and Servlets along with it so that you can get a good offer...also ASP and .Net will suffice...you can learn XML and XHTML which are advanced versions of HTML
All the Best :)
