does any other person (by person, i'm really meaning women, but men can feel this way too) feel that rape scenes, no matter what realism they bring to the film, that they are degrading, scary and disgusting? i personally, have to leave the room if i feel a rape scene is on its way.... i can't handle the images or feelings that i get afterward. Anybody else?

I have struggled with emotions like that when I see difficult images in films. I have never been able to make it all the way through "Schindler's List". Every time i see that baby hiding in the toilet i have to shut the movie off.
But you have to remember, rape is a horrific, demeaning act. If a film maker is dealing with that issue, it is in his best interest and the best interest of the film not to sugar coat it, to show it for what it is. I applaud your reaction that if something is difficult for you to see, leave the room. Or just turn it off.

Personally I think it depends how the scene is handled. Some years back an experiment was done where a rape was depicted from two different perspectives - one showed the rapist walking off afterwards feeling good about himself and the other showed the victim hurt and frightened trying to get help.
When people were shown the film it was found that the way they felt about rape changed depending on which version they had seen.
The depiction of a rape from the point of view of the victim can actually help people sympathise more with victims and may even make men who think and fantasise about rape take a fresh look at what they are thinking about.
Rape should never be glorified or depicted as something that has no unpleasant consequences. Women should never be depicted as "asking for it" and rapists should never be depicted in an heroic manner. Rape is a crime with terrible consequences for the victim and should always be portrayed as such and only when the storyline genuinely requires it, not as some pornographic side show to the main plot.

totally agree. I was watching an old seventies movie (I think it was The Last House on the Left?) and it showed a close-up of a girl's face while she was getting raped. I felt so creeped out. I also saw the remake of The Hills Have Eyes, and I had to turn it off. I was bawling. I feel that way about really violent movies too. It's a totally personal thing; some people don't react that strongly to it, even though they know that rape/violence/crime are inherently wrong.
I don't think directors and actors and the like should cut out things like violent/rape scenes in movies if they go along with the plot, but I don't think they should be glorified either. Any time I see a movie that I know or think will be violent, I have to decide if I'm going to watch it and remember that it's just a movie, or if I should just stop watching it. If I choose to continue watching, then I don't have any right to get pissed at a director or an actor for something that I don't like or agree with. It was my choice to watch. People forget that sometimes-- nobody FORCES you to go see a movie, or read a book so if you don't like it, don't buy the book or see the movie!!

rape scenes can feel personal. I agree. Once i see a film that has a rape scene in it, it is very difficult to watch that particular scene again. Example: Sleepers & Boys Don't Cry. Both brutal rape films!!!!!

Its an indiviual thing, you take the scenes knowng its a movie, its ok but if you get invovled which a Heart of Gold would , then you would feel the pain & anger of the victim & hatred towards the accused & a general discomfort in viewing.

I find these scenes disturbing too. Along with a lot of other violence. But watching these is a choice. I choose not to fill my brain with that crap. I think if a documentary has a scene that will compel society to change, It would be constructive.

I firmly DISAGREE. It presents the act in the most realistic way that is allowed (and let me tell you, it does NOT get it anywhere close to right!). They are intended to be frightening and to disgust you. It's not degrading at all. It shows the TRUTH; women are treated like dirt all the time.

It is hard to watch but it shows different stuff about the movie and why people are the way they are so sometimes it is a vital point in the movie. And other times it is just sick as in the Hills Have Eyes oh my God it was awful I couldn't watch that one. But anyways it just depends on the movie.
