What do want to know other than it adds nutrients to the soil?

The 3 macronutrients plants need to live are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Plants use these up in the soil as they live their lives. Fertilizer replaces these nutrients.

Fertilizer also causes the soil to become more acidic over time. That's why it's a good idea to put down some lime every now and then.
