i need to know the aproximate gal.. of water in a 4.5x18' swimming pool.

approximately 8,566 gallons
One cubic foot of water weighs 62.42796 pounds.
One gallon of water weighs 8.345404 pounds.
In your example, (I'm assuming it's a round pool);
Figure how many cubic feet in the pool (pi r squared times depth), multiply by the weight of a cubic foot, divide by the weight of a gallon.
3.141592654 (pi) X 9 (radius) X 9 (radius) X 4.5 (depth) X 62.42796 / 8.345404 = 8566.02... gallons (approximately)

Approximate; use the lower back of an envelope; estimate how many gallon-milk-jugs can slot in. degree the LxHxW of a milk jug. degree the LxHxW of the pool (oblong approximation). Estimate the style of gallon-jugs.
