I hope you don't mind that I chose dead people to send. Since you created a whole planet with a humanoid race, I figured you wouldn't mind, and it allowed me to choose from a wider range of people.

1. William Shakespere
Because he could best communicate about human emotions such as love. Perhaps he could give the aliens an understanding of what life on earth means at it's most raw emotional core

2. Mark Twain
He is sure to make the aliens laugh with his insight into the human conditon. Also the stories he would write about his exploits among the alien race would be priceless

3. Will Rogers
If the alein planet's politics was pompous he would be able to deflate them yet still remain likable. He could also help them understand why our own governments leave so much to be desired. Of course he would do it all with good natured humor which would serve to ease any tension between the two worlds.

4. Abraham Lincoln
His down to earth wisdom would serve us well, and if there were any tough decisions to be made we know he would not shirk his responsiblity.

5. Cleopatra
She was supposed to be the most beautiful woman the world has ever known. She also was known to be sneaky and crafty. I need not tell you how that combination might benefit us in our dealings with the aliens.

One might argue that we should send a more diverse group with the visual arts represented as well as the written word. I chose to pick those with strong written communication skills because I reasoned that these would be only the first five and we could send more later. Building a strong link with the new race through communication should be job one. After all if that fails all else might be lost.
