It was so because there were many reasons for that.
(1) The movie should have some end which should be touching to heart.
(2) It was according to the story of the film.
(3) Anything can happen in amovie so why not this thing can happen.
(4) The wood might not be so strong for both of them to be remained on that.

The wood cube will lay suspended until an outside force acts with it causing a reaction. The most likely force would be gravity from other floating objects space rocks, comets etc.. In a sense yes the wooden cube will float in space but not in the water. Even though the cube is in the water there are no forces to make the cube float/move in the water because in space you weight does not matter so no floating. You mentioned "(the mass of water is suspended in air in zero gravity)" sorry my friend but no air can be found in the vacuum of space let alone water well at least not in "mass", since the vacuum is so vast that its takes scattered to a whole new level. Although a good brain twister this event would be pretty unlikely. -.- woops i mean wood (edited).

The piece of wood was not large enough to support the weight of both of them. He tried to get on, and almost tipped it over.

If the boy is alive the movie will not be a blockbuster,bcoz it is a different ending,that why it attracted the attention of every body

If you have watched the movie... remember he tries to get on but almost tips her over when he does so I'm guessin there was no other way, unless he was being a gentleman or whatever.

The girl ,Rose, was so bloody fat tht if poor skinny Jack, our unlucky male star , had to stay in cold water ....
