a couple of ways, if your car hits hard instead of floating over small obstacles in the road or railway intersections for one...also put your weight on all of the fenders one at at time and push down, if your car bounces up and down instead of going down and then leveling off with out bouncing then you need shocks

Even if it passes the bounce test, put an eyeball on the shocks too. Any sign of fluid leakage means it's time to start budgeting for new ones.

Bounce up and down on each corner of your vehicle. If it bounces more than once before it levels out, you need shocks or struts.

push down on your fender and you should just have a little play if it goes way down then it is probably gone or if you have someone to follow you have them watch your tire and see if it is bouncing up and down . or take it of and press in the shock and if it doesnt push out by itself you need them
