I have a 81 transam I always said when I have a child he/she will get the car. I have a son now he is only a baby. I want him to grow up knowing how to work and rebuild vehicles. I want to fix it up so it can be put in car shows Should I do that or wait till he is older so he can help?

What color? I have a black/gold 1981 T/A. It would be nice to keep it around, but as other posters have said, the parts are going to get scarce. I am having a hard time finding some things. If you have the room, maybe store it away. Check with a mechanic or auto parts place about what oils/fluids you would need to store away the car. And rumor has it that Pontiac is rolling out a 2009 Firebird...

Good parts will get more and more scarce as time goes on. Pay close attention to protecting against rust if you want to keep it that long. Remove rust and paint ALL metal surfaces. Piece by piece.

It's already an aging car. Extreme efforts to preserve it should be started as soon as possible if that's what you want to do.

WAIT UNTILL HE IS OLD ENOUGH TO KNOW WHATS GOING ON. ALSO BE SURE TO HAVE A PLACE TO DO IT. A PROJECT LIKE THAT WILL TAKE UP A 2 CAR GARAGE FOR A LONG WHILE

The supply of junkyard parts is going to dry up. I say start the restoration process - or at least start collecting the parts you need to restore it - now.
