I want to say it plays a certain role in initial success but not necessarily in continued success. Because if you look at someone like Joan Rivers, who is just plain scary now, and you see that she's still successful and in demand and wealthy, well, it just doesn't make sense.

Absolutely. The only reason beauty might make you UN-successful is if those in power over you are jealous of your good looks and want to see you fail. But usually they'll just do anything you want because you're so ridiculously good-looking.

We've been trained since we were children to trust good-looking people and distrust ugly people...the hero and heroine are always the most beautiful, and the villain always has some sort of facial scar or is deformed and old.

Unfortunately, yes. People can insist that it doesn't, but we are conditioned to pay more to good-looking people and to promote them more frequently. (I assume you are talking about success in a job.)

That said, I have known many people who were average looking or even not very attractive, but they did well. I think part of it depends on the person doing the hiring and the confidence of the person.

And also look at how people react. Janet Reno, as the US Attorney General, was routinely ridiculed for her looks. Women have to live up to a higher standard when it comes to physical appearance. Women who are promoted to top jobs often are attractive or stylish.

I believe that beauty (whether real or precieved) plays a huge part in confidence, which thus has a great effect on one's success.
