Hell no!!! I gues they do it to have the characters look cool and polished, but no one really dresses like that in real life, especially American guys. In fact, most women wish they would spruce it up a little, we have to stop them from going out in ripped t'shirts and old sweatpants.

In their leisure time . . . I believe it all depends where and how they were raised -- their care takers' values as well as the image these men want to display to whoever they are trying to impress. However, the majority of men (elite and everyday people) I have seen usually wear more casual clothing -- slacks or jeans with a shirt, sweater. Sometimes more dressy slacks and white shirt but no tie in their own leisure time. Most of them have finally realized that it is okay to dress down on their own time. In all fairness though, I have noticed that more people who immigrated from elsewhere and become US citizens are more likely to be seen in slacks, white shirt, and tie at the grocery store.
What movies are you watching? Sounds like something from the 30s, 40s, or 50s.

We do on Nob Hill. Why do you say it is stupid? Are you a peasant who cannot afford a suit? It is stupid to say anything with which you disagree is stupid. I could say you are stupid if you don't wear suits 24 hours a day. Today, I wore a $2250 Zegna suit (Italian), $275 Turnbull & Asser shirt (British), $26,100 Piaget watch (Swiss), etc. I don't know where you live or what USA movies you see, but there are lower classes in all lands. Many of them here wear awful denim jeans that I wouldn't be caught dead wearing.

I only wear a suit and tie to weddings or funerals. Don't believe everything in the movies because I just saw a movie that had talking farm animals. They walked upright and even stole a car and motorcycles.

Suits make a guy look professional. They make him look good.
And, sometimes, they make a guy look sexy.
If you go walking through the park in a suit, you'll get more looks from the hot jogger chicks than the whacko in Speedos chasing along beside you.
Of course, your back and legs will have sweat stains... Just wear a black suit and not a white or tan one, put on lots of cologne, and hopefully nobody will notice.

It depends greatly on what I am doing. If I am working in the yard, clearly not; but when I come home from work, I don't change until I am ready for bed, the jacket may go, but I don't usually take off the tie until I shower. I usually don't even remember that I am wearing it.
