Direct deposit as in your employment checks? If that is what you are talking about than direct deposit is your choice, no one can force you to have direct deposit. Now some banks will offer you free checking if you have direct deposit. But you do have a choice in California.

It isn't manditory, no. I work, and mine isn't direct deposit.
