The reason for the time spans, versus actual publishing dates, is because Dickens published his works serially, in magazines, over time. I believe he was also paid by the word, hence the looooooooooooongness of his works, and the vivid descriptions of furniture and curtains that make you want to die. May I suggest abridged versions?
