Try a compact foundation. You apply it like powder and can control how much or little you want. But if you want a sheer light weight coverage try Clinique's Almost Make-up foundation. It goes on sheer, oil free and has sunscreen. They also have a product called Perfectly Real that comes in liquid or compact form. I've tried both and love them.

Make-up application can be tricky sometimes. If you visit the Clinique counter at Dillard's, Macy's, Nordstrom's, Lord and Taylor etc. you can ask the counter person to show you how to apply the product. I go when the season's change to see how the new colors will look on me. And the consultations are free.

I wear Bare Minerals foundation. I did not care for the feeling that liquid foundation on my skin.
I've been wearing it for 3 1/2 years and I'm glad I made the switch. It doesn't clog your pores, you control the coverage and it has a natural SPF15.
If you're near either a Bare Escentuals boutique or Sephora I would stop in and check it out. They will be able to help you find the shade right for you. Both carry the starter kit, it ranges from $60-$75. It has 2 foundation shades, warmth, mineral veil, 3 brushes, instructional DVD and a couple of other things.
Both stores have a good return policy, so check it out, you have nothing to lose.

Foundation isn't a necessity. If it feels too heavy, don't wear it. Just use some blush, mascara and some lipgloss. Enjoy the simplicity. I t looks nice, it's easy and guys love that wholesome look; rather than looking like old Aunt Edna, who you are afraid is going to leave an imprint of her face on your shirt when she hugs you!
If you do use foundation, liquid is easier to control the amount (thickness) that you apply and won't give you such a heavy feeling.

The best makeup I have found is mineral makeup. It only comes in powder form. It is more expensive than regular drug store makeup, but it lasts longer. The brand I use is Bare Minerals. You can get it at Sephora. It is very light, and won't make you look like you are wearing too much.

I personally like the powder better, I was so pissed off, when Avon discontinued the kind that I like, the color matched my complexion so well that you coudn't tell I was wearing make-up. After that, I started wearing Maybelline mousse foundation and I like it as well.

find a fondation that matches your skin tone first and then once you use it add lotion to it that isn't greasy, it looks more natural and gives your face still coverage.
