I heard about this country a few times in the news, but I can't find it in the atlas.

Kurdistan is a part of Northern Iraq. This group of people have seceded from the nation of Iraq, and declared it a country.

The region is primarily in southeastern Turkey, northern Iraq, and in northwestern Iran.

It does not exist...yet. It is the north of Iraq and south of Turkey area, that was remapped by Churchill. The land remains and the millions of Kurds do too.

its not actually a country as such, but a group of people claiming a small area of land that lies over the south-eastern border of turkey and the north-western border of iraq, and calling it 'kurdistan'.
