I have a Toshiba Laptop (Satellite A20) and I need more RAM. I currently have two 256. Is it better to buy two 512 or one 1024? Where is the best place to buy RAM (on-line or retail store?)? Are there any brands that are better than others? Thanks in advance for your help and information!

checking,..

Maximum memory size is 2 sticks of 512, so dont get the 1GB.

For the A-20-S207, A-20-S208, A-20-S259, A20-S2591 models.
( these are the only A-20 models found on the web site).

These models supports up to 1024MB total , you can use two 512MB SODIMM 2.5V
( 533MHz system bus, PC2100 )

512MB ( 2 DIMM) DDR SDRAM ( Expandable to 1024MB)
( Both slots may be occupied)
Expansion memory: 128MB/256MB/512MB/1024MB PC2100 DDR, SODIMM 2.5V

See the link to the Toshiba site below, and links to get you there.
The pages take extra time to load for some reason, be patient.

Ebay is usually the cheapest, check feedback of the seller.

You can use both formats, 2 x 512MB or 1 x 1GB, as long as both are the same type, speed and manufacturer.
Depending on your budget, laptop ram can be bought on line or from a retail store, but unless your really familiar with these, I would suggest to use a retail store and get them to install it as well.
Brand wise: Kingston is the "top of the line brand", but you can use other brands as well, just depends on what you can afford to spend.

Are you having probs w/ 512 megs?
More than likely you've got two slots. How you get to a Gig is up to you.

best place i know of is 1-800-4-memory, i would personally take the stick of 1024mb... that way you can eventually put 2GB in the notebook if it will take that much. (will be needed when vista ships!) they will even tell you what kinda of memory you need and how much you can put into each slot, oh yeah they are very cheap too! :D google them or give em a call.
