I've noticed that whenever I am in class (college) especially when it's quiet, my stomach starts growling. It doesn't really matter if I'm hungry or not. It just does it all the time. I think it has something to do with being nervous especially since I am so minful of it when it gets quiet in the classroom. And it never fails. I know it sounds stupid, but I don't want to quit school because of something like this. It is so embarresing. Please help. Does anyone know what I could do to stop this?

Dear Nurse Patti,
What causes my stomach to growl? Is it always hunger? It's so embarrassing when it happens during a meeting or somewhere that's quiet.
Michele from Newburgh

Dear Michele,
It is embarrassing, but we've all had it happen. We almost always associate noise from the upper abdomen with hunger, but that's not always the case.
Digestion is really quite a noisy process. Loud rumbling or gurgling from within the abdomen is the normal action of your stomach and intestines propelling food through your digestive tract. This is called peristalsis, and some days it's just noisier and louder than others.

Some of the sounds are an empty stomach. Some of the sounds are your stomach digesting what is in it. Some of the sounds will be your stomach letting you know it is nervous. I use to eat ice or drink some water (times were hard) before class time. Carry some snacks to munch on. If this fails please know everybody's body make these noises. Treat it as your body is communicating with you. Tell it you will feed it as soon as you can. (don't do this out loud) Please don't think about quitting school because of this.

This is an oxymoron. Your stomach is not quiet when it is growling.
(A little joke)
Your stomach becomes active when it is empty. A light snack of some nuts or crackers with peanut butter or cheese just before class migh soothe its complaints.

It probably growl when the environment is noisy, you just aren't aware of it. The growling is peristalsis, the mechanical action of food passing through the intestines.
