Hi, I'm a student in chicago, IL. I am senior about to apply to college. I was thinking to apply to many colleges especially UIC. Am i able to get into UIC with the test scores, attendence, grades, ranks etc that i have. Ok, I have a 17 ACT score which is horrible I have test anxiety. I also have a 4.0 gpa. I rank top 30 out of 500-600 students. My attendence is 90% and above. I am over a limit of my service learning hours. I have earn some awards such as getting first place in the history fair at my school and also got superior and excellent ratings in citywide piano contest. I have wrote a personal statement, however i know that UIC does not xrequire u have to do one, but i was thinking that it might look better if i did a Personal statement. Do you know what are my chances? Thanks for your time.

And BTW, i want maybe some of you guys and gals to review my personal essay. Send me a PM if you want.

I just want to know what are my chances.

The average ACT score for this year's entering freshman was 23. Your attendence doesnt really matter... Your class rank is exceptionally high, but your ACT is well below their average score. As far as the personal statement, if they don't ask for it, it most likely won't be read. UIC is a pretty large school, so the people reviewing applications most likely won't be able to take the time to read through it.

If you haven't already done so I would highly recommend retaking the ACT while you still have time. Since you've already been through the stress of taking it once, perhaps you wont be as nervous the second time. Your class rank shows you're much smarter than your score, so I'm positive you'll do much better.

Do remeber that the 23 is the "average" score, so half of the people accepted did score below that.

4.0/4.0 GPA and top 10 percent of your class will definitely help. The essay may not be read, but you never know; plus even if it is not read the fact that you took the time to write a personal statement says that you are dedicated and want to go to UIC (another plus for you).

The ACT score is a downer however. Is test anxiety the only factor? Look into getting extra time for taking the test. If you decide to retake ACT, focus especially on areas where you can make most improvement, but go over all sections using one of the practice books. Raising your score a couple of points will almost guarantee your admission. As for trying your luck with SAT, don't waste your time. You already know how ACT works and you might as well stick with it. Then again, find out the difference between the two tests and if you think SAT may be a better pick for you then go for it.

At any rate, good luck. Your chances are estimated as: fairly good (but get those couple of points to seal the deal)!

PS If UIC denies, appeal immediately (but I doubt it will come to that).

UIC should not be a problem to get into with a 4.0. I would recommend also recommend taking the SAT since you might get a better score. Try applying to University of Chicago.
