It depends on how much more pain that it will cause you later if you do not go through some pain to stand up for it now !!!
If it means protecting this country and are future and our children's future by offensive measures ----- yes, collectively the pain is less now.
If it is the right to show your thong under-ware at school - for get it -not worth the pain now -- catch my drift ?

If you are really and truly behind the cause you are standing up for then I think you should be willing to stand up for it regarding the pain it may cause you. Many issues people stand up for cause them pain because there are always going to be people on the other side who oppose their beliefs and who are going to treat them badly. Any worthy cause is worth putting your heart and soul into if it may help change people's perceptions about things....

I think that it depends on what you are standing up for. If you are just doing it to be stubborn or get your way then it probably isn't worth it. If it is something that you truly believe in, it is definitely worth it. Stand up, shout it out!!!!

Can you please clarify by telling exactly WHAT you are standing up for?
But, usually I say yes, it is worth it, if you have the intestinal fortitude to stand behind your beliefs. But you do need to be able to back your beliefs with facts and a basis in truth.

Only if you have thought it through.
Pick your battles, some are worth fighting and some are worth nothing at all.

It depends on the situation. There are times you have to swallow your pride, (thats if your endangering your life or your friends/familes life) but usually you have to tell people how you truly feel or they will never understand your motives. Telling people how you feel will not just give you respect from others but most important to yourself.
hope this helps (:
