You should wait until you book a SAG job, otherwise you will be paying dues to SAG, even though you are not booking SAG work. Why give them money?

If you are in NY or LA where the soaps are taped, if you book a speaking role (you can join SAG). At least that is how it was a few years ago.

Extra work. Get to do lots of extra work, get to know people. Also keep your self ready. I was an extra on Sister Act 2 and a body double for one of the monks did not show up. I knew the monk was my size so I quickly told the A.D. I would love to do the bit. Next thing I know I have gotten two speaking lines, and my invitation to join the guild. So it worked for me and I suck. Good luck.

Background work. There is a book called Background Acting for Brain Surgeons. It would be very helpful to you.
